The years since the launching of its first residential and thematic programs in 1994 have seen a progressively higher profile for the Institute, in the community and abroad. Through the events and research opportunities at the Institute, strategic alliances with on-campus research initiatives, such as the UBC Institute for Computing, Information, and Cognitive Systems (ICICS), and public talks given in the larger community, new groups and individuals at UBC link to the world’s leading scholars and institutions. This exceptional level of interdisciplinary scholarship communicates within a global framework.
The Institute is actively engaged with of some of the world's most dynamic institutes for advanced study. Partnerships of deep substance have been forged with the forerunner of all institutes for advanced study, the Collège de France in Paris, established in 1530, and one of the newest, the Technical University of Munich - Institute for Advanced Study, founded in 2005. The Peter Wall Director is a founding member of the latter's International Board of Trustees. The Institute has also partnered with Africa's young, premier institute for advanced study, in Stellenbosch, South Africa: Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study (STIAS).
In recognition of its commitment to collaborations with its formal international partners, the Institute launched two special programs: International Exchanges and Wall Colloquia Abroad.
