Student Research Internship 2013

The Peter Wall Institute offers student research internships for 1st and 2nd year undergraduate students. No previous research experience is required. Students will work on Peter Wall Solutions Initiatives. Project areas include housing justice, education, environment, engineering and health. Deadline for applications is April 2, 2013.

UBC Student Competition: Arts-Based Conceptions of Water

The Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies is running a student competition for arts-based presentations of still images/works or performance/video pieces of 4 to 10 minutes on the topic of water (“the piece”).

In September 2013, the Peter Wall Institute will host a public panel discussion on the need for cross-disciplinary strategies to deal with the global, financial, ecological and societal issues relating to water. The panel will take place at UBC during a conference of University-Based Institutes for Advanced Study, bringing together more than 90 international scholars from around the world. To help showcase these issues, the Institute is awarding up to four student prizes for an arts-based piece on some aspect of water. The proposed piece can be in the visual arts - painting, sculpture, textile, video or some other aspect of the visual arts and/or it can be in the performing arts - song, instrumental, dance, theatre or other performing arts.

Dr. B. Brett Finlay wins Life Sciences British Columbia Award



The Peter Wall Institute is delighted to announce that Dr. B. Brett Finlay, Peter Wall Distinguished Professor and Professor in the Departments of Microbiology and Immunology, and Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, will receive the 2013 Life Sciences British Columbia Award. These awards are presented annually to recognize individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to the development of British Columbia’s life sciences industry.

Dr. Finlay will host the Spring 2013 Wall Exchange entitled "Bugs 'R Us: The Role of Microbes in Health, Disease and Society" on Tuesday May 21 at the Vogue Theatre in Vancouver.

UBIAS Conference on Scientific and Academic Knowledge

The Peter Wall Institute is proud to host the 2013 Biannual University-Based Institutes for Advanced study (UBIAS) this September.  This conference is an initiative by the UBIAS network to strengthen relationships among member institutes and spread knowledge globally. Scholars at different stages of their careers, from the humanities and sciences, will have the opportunity to share ideas among themselves, graduate students, and the public over the course of the three days.

Visualizing climate change will foster practical solutions: book

On Monday January 21, 2013, Institute Associate Dr. Stephen Sheppard facilitated an interesting discussion at the Wall Scholars Café on 'Changing social norms on climate change locally: can we and should we?'  Discussions covered various topics, including many issues found in his recently published book, “Visualizing Climate Change: A Guide to Visual Communication of Climate Change and Developing Local Solutions".

Peter Wall Institute Renovations

The Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies will be undergoing renovations.  As a result, the Institute’s staff has relocated to the annex of the building, and all Institute Associate offices have been relocated to Mary Bollert Hall.  Rental facilities, including the Conference Space and Guest Rooms, will be unavailable as of November 26, 2012 and are scheduled to re-open on September 15, 2013.  Please contact the Institute’s reception at 604-822-0199 for any additional information.
